Today’s events include:
The bean throwing festival. It is the day before the beginning of spring in Japan. Setsubun leterally means seasonal division.
The ritual of Mamemaki (literally – bean scattering). Roasted soybeans, called fortune beans are thrown out the door or at a member of the family wearing an Oni (demon/ogre) mask, while the household says Demons Out! Luke in! and slam the door.
The beans are thought to symbolically purify the home by driving away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them.
It is then customary to eat roasted soybeans to ritually bring luck in to the household.

Daily Trivia: Miami University performed experiments by having spiders listen to music. When techno or rap was played, the spiders made their webs as far away from the speaker as possible. When listening to Bach, they made their webs as near to the speaker as possible.
