I have just finished re-watching Game of Thrones in preparation for the upcoming airing of Season 6.
If for some reason you haven’t watched the show that far through yet, bookmark and come back when you do so no spoilers.
I did a similar post a ways back. Since then many things have changed. Some of my theories have been disproven or new evidence has come to light.
So a summary of the characters and what I think is ahead for them, in no particular order.
Jamie Lannister – Looses a hand in GoT, looses his eyes in Gods of Egypt, and at the end of season 5, his daughter. Then he is going to return to King’s Landing to find out about Cirsei’s walk of shame. And that’s when the fighting started….
Cersei Lannister has to be itching to take some vengeance out on someone by now. Lost a son, walk of shame, and about to learn about her daughter’s fate. Just when poor Trystane Martel arrives with Jamie. Not liking Trystane’s odds. And that could kick off fresh hostilities with Dorne….
Tyrion and Varys along with Missandei and Grey Worm are playing politics. Where I have no doubt they will overcome in dramatic circumstances. But with Dany currently absent, they won’t find things easy.
But its up in the north where things are getting interesting. I would shed no tears seeing Ramsay Bolton see a bitter and perhaps even ironically macabre end. Which probably means he will be around a while. We do need someone to hate with Joffrey gone. But I really don’t know whats going to happen next with Sansa and Reek/Theon. Which makes that one of the more compelling arcs to the story.
Arya will continue her faceless training. It will be dark and creepy and such. The Iron Bank is making noises so I suspect there may be a number of familiar faces popping by.
Bran and Hodor have been hardly touched for ages. Perhaps they are soon to learn the true origin of the White Walkers? At any rate, they have been underdone in recent seasons and if we don’t start to see more of them, the conneciton to the characters will fade as will their relevance to viewers.
Danaerys ended season 5 in the company of a Dothraki Khalasar. She will, end up re-crowned as Khaleesi, clawing her way up from the position of prisoner, because that is who she is.
Samwell. A name for secondary characters who are secretly the real heroes of the story. Off to learn about being a Maester. But also, he will mention somewhere about the White Walkers to the learned teachers. Many will likely ridicule him as a result, but it only takes one to recognise the sincerity of his tale.
Littlefinger is addicted to power. His goal is to see how high a lowborn can rise if they are smart enough and ruthless enough to earn it. You can almost see the way he drools over the iron throne whenever he is near it. Ambition that I think will ultimately become his undoing, but I also think Littlefinger has many more moves up his sleeve before reaching that point.
Jon Snow. I don’t think he will stay dead. I think the fans got too close to figuring out Jon’s big secret and George threw it in just to mess with them. Melisandre will (ahem) fire him up. I think she senses a kings blood in his veins. And since Ned Stark was no king….. oooh! I hear rumblings of deceased characters appearing in Season 6, presumably for flashback sequences. Perhaps we will learn the secret of John Snow this season? Which would be a fine highlight for a season that begins with people wondering if he is gone for good.
Actually, the idea occurred to me part way through season 5, around when everything is going pear-shaped for Danaerys, was that we are witnessing the gradual way Danaerys is corrupted by power and her journey to reclaim the iron throne. Ultimately becoming a ruler so merciless in exercising her authority, we start to miss old Joffrey. I could totally see George R R Martin consider the idea and breaking out in fits of giggles. Ultimately, I rejected the idea because she has too many honourable people in her entourage that would end up opposing her. But it is totally something he’d do.
We shall soon see together.
