Today’s Focus: Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice
A public holiday in Argentina commemorating the victims of the Dirty War (also known as the Process of National Reorganization), which was a period of state terrorism between 1974 abd 1983. During this time (some sources suggest it may date back to 1969), military and security forces and right-wing death squads hunted down and killed left-wing guerrillas, political dissidents, and anyone believed to be associated with socialism. Declassified documents of the Chilean secret police estimate 22,000 killed or “disappeared” between 1975 and mid 1978 alone.
Eventually, democratic government was restored and legislation passed to provide compensation to the families of victims.
