Today’s Focus: Dyngus Day
A Polish Holiday. Tradition states that Prince Mieszko I, along with his court was baptized on Easter Monday. Dyngus Day has come to include rites of sprinkling with water in thanksgiving for the fact that the first king of Poland was baptized into Christianity.
In more recent times, Polish boys will throw or sprinkle water at girls to attract their attention. Sometimes (hopefully gently) hitting their legs with twigs or pussy willows. Some lads may use cologne instead of water. The girls would get revenge the following day by throwing crockery at the boys, though more recently, have responded with reciprocal water based attacks.
Apparently, the word Dyngus can be traced to a medievil form which meant “worthy”, “proper” or “suitable”.
