In a round that pretty much proved my AFL tipping is way off the mark, here is the summary of how our Supercoach League went.
NB: numbers next to team names at the beginning of each game report (shown in round brackets) represent their ladder position going into the round. Numbers next to team names in the next opponent section [shown in square brackets] represent the team’s ladder position at the end of round 2.
Galaxy’s Guns (12) vs Kobayashi Maru (2)
Key players missing from team line ups: No “superstars” missing from either side.
Blue = Kobayashi Maru, Red = Galaxy’s Guns
Commentary: Kobayashi Maru continued their early form, accounting comfortably for the Guns. With a solid captain’s performance by Robbie Gray (PTA) supported by four other players cracking 100 points. Galaxy’s Guns captain was Nick Naitanui, who performed well below his projection with just 80 points. Three other players for the guns broke 100 points, and a donut on the field with no bench support left them out of touch when the final siren sounded.
The one sour note for now top of the ladder Kobayashi Maru being a hamstring injury for D Rich (BRL).
Kobayashi Maru: R Gray (PTA), R Griffen (GWS), K Tippett (SYD), B Vince (MEL), R Murphy (WB)
Galaxy’s Guns: R Laird (ADE), J Ziebell (NTH), W Langford (HAW)
Kobayashi Maru: D Rich (BRL) hamstring
Kobayashi Maru: 2 wins, 0 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Motley Crew
Galaxy’s Guns: 0 wins, 2 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Out of Peptides
Brendan’s Lobos (11) vs Clem Fandango (10)
Key players missing from team line ups:
Blue = Clem Fandango, Red = Brendan’s Lobos
Commentary: There was just no stopping Brendan’s Lobos this week. Rebounding from a round 1 loss with the second highest score in the league for that round, the Lobos went on to post a new record for highest team score, almost 100 points more than the next highest score this season (which was in the next game). 8 players broke the ton for the Lobos, so even the captain, Todd Goldstein (NTH) performing below par with 95 points against a projected 128 couldn’t slow them down.
Clem Fandango had 3 players crack the ton, including captain Jack Riewoldt (RIC) with 112, but we simply outclassed on the day.
Brendan’s Lobos: S Thompson (ADE), B Kennedy (MEL), D Zorko (BRL), M Adams (WB), L Hunter (WB), M Walters (FRE), C Rioli (HAW), L Parker (SYD)
Clem Fandango: B Houli (RIC), J Riewoldt (RIC), S Grigg (RIC)
Clem Fandango J Westhoff (PTA) dislocated finger
Clem Fandango J Townsend (RIC)
Brendan’s Lobos: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: Rough Draft
Clem Fandango: 0 wins, 2 losses – ladder position – next opponent White Line Fever
Motley Crew (16) vs musashimonsters (7)
Key players missing from team line ups:Motley Crew H Hartlett (PTA)
Commentary: With the captain Tom Rockliff (BRL) going down injured with just 48 points, the Crew struggled this week. They had 3 players achieve 100+ points. Meanwhile musashimonsters had 6 players crack the ton, pulling away for the 4 points and their second win of the season with the second highest team score behind Brendan’s Lobos.
Motley Crew: J Merrett (ESS), T Lynch (GCS), T Mitchell (SYD)
musashimonsters: D Martin (RIC), Z Merrett (ESS), D Wells (NTH), A Hall (GCS), M Blicavs (GEE), S Kerridge (CAR)
Motley Crew T Rockliff (BRL) calf, B Boekhorst (CAR) corkie
Motley Crew N Vlastuin (RIC) rough conduct
Motley Crew: 0 wins, 2 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Kobayashi Maru
musashimonsters: 2 wins, 0 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Todd Goldmember
White Line Fever (15) vs Jackson 22 (8)
Key players missing from team line ups: Jackson 22 I Maric (RIC)
Commentary: A mixed bag for both teams this week. White Line Fever saw a return to form for captain N Fyfe (FRE), scoring 157, but only 2 other players cracking the ton, and 3 donuts on the field with only 2 players on the interchange scoring to cover.
Meanwhile, Jackson 22 saw their captain, P Dangerfield (GEE) perform well below expectations with 76 points against a projected 144. However, 5 other players cracking the ton got the job done and brought the 22 home with the win.
White Line Fever: N Fyfe (FRE), N Riewoldt (STK), J Kelly (ESS)
Jackson 22: K McIntosh (RIC), T Lynch (ADE), T Greene (GWS), T Scully (GWS), H Cunningham (SYD)
Jackson 22: C Wingard (PTA) hamstring
White Line Fever: 0 wins, 2 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Clem Fandango
Jackson 22: 2 wins, 0 losses – ladder position – next opponent TeamarinoWazarino
Todd Goldmember (14) vs KilpatrickDangrfld (3)
Key players missing from team line ups: No “Superstars” missing from either team.
Commentary: Both team captains had ordinary weeks. For Todd Goldmember, Heath Shaw (GWS) managed just 74, while for KilpatrickDangrfld, Matt Priddis (WC) didnt do much better with just 79. But the difference between the sides is much clearer when you realise that nobody for KilpatrickDangrfld managed 100+ points this week! Meanwhile, the 3 100+ point scorers for Todd Goldmember were enough to bring home their first win of the season.
Earlier this week, the first team-to-team trade went through, and not without controversy. Four league members voted to block the trade between Todd Goldmember and Wanda Bombers, which is less than the requisite 7 votes needed to block the trade. Yet, Todd Goldmember chose to leave their new recruit, David Mundy (FRE) who scored 78, on the bench. The traded player, Callum Sinclair (SYD) scored 116, but was also left on the bench. As a result, neither player impacted the outcomes of either match.
Todd Goldmember: D Zaharakis (ESS), A Fasolo (COL), J Johannisen (WB)
KilpatrickDangrfld: In a team where nobody managed 100, D Prestia (GCS)
Todd Goldmember: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: musashimonsters
KilpatrickDangrfld: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: WADA you want
TeamarinoWazarino (13) vs Wanda Bombers (4)
Key players missing from team line ups: TeamarinoWazarino Luke Hodge (HAW)
Commentary: The closest game of the round with just 51 points between the teams in the end. Interestingly, both teams had players that scored 100+ on their bench that didn’t end up affecting the final score. Had TeamarinoWazarino had Andrew Mackie (GEE) 120 pts on the ground, he could have won. But by the same token, if Wanda Bombers had not left Callum Sinclair (SYD) 116 pts on the bench, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
Wanda Bombers were led by a strong captain’s game by Kieran Jack (SYD) with 101 points and 5 other players on the field cracking the ton. Two donuts on the field were covered by the two lowest players on the bench, leaving Callum Sinclair as the 3rd player on the bench with points the only one who missed out contributing to the team’s final score.
TeamarinoWazarino saw captain Rory Sloane (ADE) score a disappointing 81, with 3 other players on the field cracking the ton.
Scores for both teams were relatively low given the number of 100+ point scorers, with a number of players for both sides scoring in the 30-50 range, highlighted by Jared Polec (PTA) scoring just 8 for TeamarinoWazarino.
TeamarinoWazarino: L Montagna (STK), J Lewis (HAW), S Martin (BRL)
Wanda Bombers: M Baguley (ESS), O Wines (PTA), B Grundy (COL), K Jack (SYD), I Smith (HAW), B Brown (NTH)
TeamarinoWazarino: C Marchbank (GWS) ankle
TeamarinoWazarino: 0 wins, 2 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Jackson 22
Wanda Bombers: 2 wins, 0 losses – ladder position – next opponent Garry’s Lyon
WADA you want (1) vs Fourthorn (5)
Key players missing from team line ups: No “superstars” missing from either team.
Commentary: The highest placed teams after round one, and another close result with 74 points as the final margin. Fourthorn captain, Callan Ward (GWS) scored just under 100 with 97, but had support from four players on the ground that cracked the ton, including an inspired 191 points from Josh Gibson (HAW). Fourthorn also had a player on their bench pass the 100 point mark, in Billy Hartung (HAW) with 104 points.
WADA you want saw captain Dan Hannebery (SYD) rack up a strong 121 points, supported by 2 other players cracking the ton, but just were not quite enough, seeing Fourthorn take the four points.
WADA you want: D Hannebery (SYD), S Mitchell (HAW), E Curnow (CAR)
Fourthorn: S Pendlebury (COL), J Jenkins (ADE), K Lambert (RIC), J Gibson (HAW)
WADA you want: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: KilpatrickDangrfld
Fourthorn: 2 wins, 0 losses – ladder position – next opponent: Ed
Garry’s Lyon (18) vs Ed (6)
Key players missing from team line ups: Ed: Dane Swan (COL), Steele Sidebottom (COL)
Commentary: Last week, Garry’s Lyon was a side littered with donuts. This week, it was Ed‘s turn with three donuts on the field, though they were ultimately covered by his interchange.
Ed‘s captain, Gary Ablett jr (GCS) scored a solid 120 and was backed up by five other 100 point scorers.
But Garry’s Lyon, led by captain Aaron Sandilands (FRE) with 108 points had six other players crack the ton, and higher averages from the rest of the team, pulling away to win by a comfortable margin.
Garry’s Lyon: A Sandilands (FRE), B Reid (COL), T Cotchin (RIC), D Thomas (CAR), P Cripps (CAR), J Harbrow (GCS), J Martin (GCS)
Ed: G Ablett (GCS), B Harvey (NTH), A Sexton (GCS), S Johnson (GWS), B Ellis (RIC), B Goddard (ESS)
Garry’s Lyon J Short (RIC) left collarbone
Garry’s Lyon: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: Wanda Bombers
Ed: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: Fourthorn
Out of Peptides (17) vs Rough Draft (9)
Key players missing from team line ups: Out of Peptides J Roughead (HAW), M Robinson (BRL)
Rough Draft L Shiels (HAW), H Bennell (FRE), J O’Meara (GCS)
Commentary: Out of Peptides performed the first Captain’s Loophole for the season after his vice-captain Jarrad Waite (NTH) posted a 174 point game. Bringing injured Jarryd Roughead (HAW) into the side and shifting the captaincy from Josh P Kennedy (SYD) to Roughy. With two other players on the field scoring 100+ points, and a third player coming off the bench to cover a donut with 100+, the one donut left against the team score didn’t hurt enough to affect the game’s outcome.
Rough Draft was led by captain Lance Franklin (SYD) with 102 points. Two other players cracked the ton, but two donuts with no bench coverage accounted for the 162 deficit in the final score.
Out of Peptides: E Betts (ADE), T Papley (SYD), J Waite (NTH), M Pavlich (FRE)
Rough Draft: L Franklin (SYD), T Liberatore (WB), C Guthrie (GEE)
Out of Peptides: K Turner (NTH) late withdrawal – hamstring
Rough Draft: S Thompson (NTH) late withdrawal – soreness
Out of Peptides: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: Galaxy’s Guns
Rough Draft: 1 win, 1 loss – ladder position – next opponent: Brendan’s Lobos
