Today’s Focus: Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action
I worked with a gentlemen a few years ago whose daughter volunteered in southeast Asia to help supply prosthetics to individuals that had lost limbs to land mines.
For example, Wikipedia states that Cambodia has had around 40,000 amputees, being one of the highest rates in the world. Meanwhile, local authorities estimate that there may be as many as four to six million mines and other unexploded pieces of ordnance in Cambodia. We are not talking about soliders here, as many of the victims are civilians – even children.
Sometimes it can be easy for those living in areas not afflicted by such issues to forget how fortunate they are. Today, is a chance to think of those who aren’t so lucky.
And as today is also World Rat Day, would you be surprised to learn that those little pests are helping with the issue of land mines? Source here.
Daily Trivia: “RPG”, when used in reference to the RPG-7 weapon, does not stand for rocket propelled grenade. Instead, it is a Russian acronym for Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot, roughly translated as “hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher.”
