Today’s Focus: Bataan Day
Filipino Day of Valor, also Bataan and Corregidor Day is a national observance in the Phillipines commemorating the fall of Bataan during Waorld War II.
On 9 April 1942, Major General E P King Jr surrendered more than 76,000 starving and disease-ridden soldiers to Japanese troops. These soldiers included 67,000 Filipinos, 1,000 Chinese fighters, and 11,796 Americans.
These prisoners of war had belongings confiscated and were forced to walk 140 kilometres to a prison camp where thousands died from poor conditions or execution.
Only around 54,000 of the prisoners reached their desitination, though the exact death toll is difficult to determine as a number were able to escape their guards en-route.
