I recently returned to playing World of Warcraft after several years break. The following is some information I put together for friends and guild mates around mounts that drop from various monsters in the open world, dungeons, or raids in World of Warcraft.
I have personally only collected some of these mounts, with most of the information presented being collated from other online resources. If you find anything that is out of date, or there are additional tips you might like to include, please add them to the comments section.
Generally, people don’t go out of their way to chase mounts while levelling, and this is written from the perspective of going back at max level and doing mount runs.
Mounts from Quests, vendors, or PVP rewards are not included in this guide.
General note: Mounts do not drop in LFR mode of raids. If a specific mode is required (eg: Heroic) for an instance and is known from my research, I will make specific note of it.
Amani Battle Bear
In Zul’Aman (level 85 dungeon located in Ghostlands). There is a timed run available. If you succeed in completing the timed run including rescuing Kasha from Halazzi, you will receive a bag as a reward that can include this mount. High drop rate if conditions are met.
(Kasha – left), Halazzi – right)
Armored Razorback – Tundra Icehoof – Warsong Direfang
These three mounts are listed together because they are all chances to drop from the same open world creatures. There are four elite creatures to hunt for this, and all spawn in Tanaan Jungle. As you kill each of these four, the first kill daily can drop a Rattling Iron Cage, that will return one of the three mounts (you can get the same mount multiple times). Allegedly drop rate is somewhere around 15%.
The creatures to hunt are Vengeance, Deathtalon, Terrorfist, and Doomroller.
(Vengeance and known spawn locations)
(Deathtalon and known spawn locations)
(Terrorfist and known spawn locations)
(Doomroller and known spawn locations)
Armored Razzashi Raptor
This mount comes from Zul’Gurub (not to be confused with Zul’Aman) which is a level 85 dungeon located in Northern Stranglethorn.
It drops from Bloodlord Mandokir. I have not seen information on the drop rate, but have killed the boss personally and not seen it drop.
(Bloodlord Mandokir and his location in Zul’Gurub)
Ashes of A’lar
This mount drops from Kael’thas Sunstrider in The Eye, Tempest Keep. It does also rarely appear on the Black Market. This has a low drop rate from Kael’thas. Getting this mount from either source awards an achievement.
(Kael’thas Sunstrider in The Eye)
Astral Cloud Serpent
This eye-catching mount drops from Elegon in Mogu’shan Vaults, rarely. As in less than 1% drop rate rarely. When attempting this boss, note that he spawns a Celestial Protector. If this MoB is killed while inside the circle area around Elegon, it will auto wipe your group regardless of level or abilities in effect. If soloing the instance as I did, turn off all AoE effects and do not target the Protector. Can also appear rarely on the Black Market.
(Elegon)
Azure Drake
This mount is a reward from The Eye of Eternity. A level 80 10/25 man raid located in Coldarra. This raid can also reward Blue Drake which will be a separate entry as it comes from Oculus as well.
A short raid and one my Warlock could easily solo (I was probably level 90 when I first did so). Its third phase does involve riding dragons where your character level is nullified, but I had Malygos (the raid boss) on 1% health by this point and only had to zap him once for the kill.
(Malygos)
Black Drake
This mount is dropped by Sartharion in Obsidian Sanctum (level 80 raid located beneath Wyrmrest Temple). I got this one myself on my first solo run, and got one for my brother on his first run.
(Sartharion)
Black Primal Raptor
There are three different coloured Primal Raptors. In Isle of Giants, devilsaurs, direhorns and skyscreamers can drop a Primal Egg. After 3 days the egg will become cracked and can then be activiated for a mount.
Blazing Drake
This mount is a rare drop from Madness of Deathwing in the Dragon’s Soul Raid (level 85), available from both Normal and Heroic modes. This is a Caverns of Time raid instance. This raid can also reward Life-Binder’s Handmaiden, but that mount only drops on Heroic, so a Heroic run is recommended. This fight is worth checking up on in guides as there are aspects that will wipe regardless of level.
(Deathwing)
Blue Drake
This drake is a chance to drop from Occulus and Eye of Eternity (the latter being a far easier and less sucky raid). Can also rarely drop from “Call to Arms” rewards satchel and the Black Market.
Blue Proto-Drake
Drops from Skadi the Ruthless in Utgarde Pinnacle (heroic). > 2% drop rate. Also rarely drops from “Call to Arms’ reward satchels and the Black Market.
(Skadi)
Bronze Drake
Drops in The Culling Of Stratholme from the Infinite Corruptor. Who will only spawn if the rest of the instance is completed in under 25 minutes. 90% drop rate.
Clutch of Ji-Kun
Drops from Ji-Kun in Throne of Thunder. Approx 1% drop rate. Also appears rarely on Black Market.
(Jin-Kun)
Drake of the North Wind
Drops from Altarius in Vortex Pinnacle <1% drop rate. Also rarely appears in Black Market.
(Altarius)
Drake of the SouthWind
Drops from Heart of Wind in Throne of the Four Winds >1% drop rate. Also can appear in the Black Market.
Experiment 12-B
Possible prize from Dragon Soul. Can appear in Black Market.
Felblaze Infernal
This mount drops from Gul’dan in Nighthold in any difficulty except LFR as a rare drop. A different colour of the same mount drops in Mythic with 100% drop rate.
(Gul’dan)
Felsteel Annihilator
Dropped from Archimonde in Hellfire Citadel (Draenor – Mythic) – maybe 50% drop rate.
(Archimonde)
Fiery Warhorse
Drops from Attumen the Huntsman in Karahzan (low drop rate). Also rarely appears in the Black Market.
(Attumen)
Flametalon of Alysrazor
Drops from Alysrazor in Firelands (around 5% drop rate). Can also appear in the Black Market.
(Alysrazor)
Garn Nighthowl
Drops from Nok-Karosh in Frostfire Ridge. 100% drop rate but a rare spawn.
(Nok-Karosh)
Grand Black War Mammoth
Horde version pictured (Alliance has different colour scheme). Less than 1% drop rate from each of the Winterspring raid bosses – Vault of Archavon (level 80), Archavon, Emalon, Koralon and Toravon. Your faction must control Winterspring to enter the raid.
(The four bosses in Vault of Archavon)
Great Greytusk
Drops from Gorok, a rare spawn found in Frostfire Ridge. 100% drop rate.
(Gorok and known spawn locations)
Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent
Drops from the Sha of Anger in Kun-Lai Summit. Very low drop rate. Also can appear in the Black Market.
(Sha of Anger and known spawn location)
Infinite Timereaver
A chance to drop from any Timewalking boss, less than 1% drop rate.
Invincible
Drops from Arthas in Icecrown Citidel (level 80) – Heroic 25 man mode. Low drop rate.
(Arthas)
Ironhoof Destroyer
Drops from Blackhand in Blackrock Foundry – Mythic. Low drop rate.
(Blackhand)
Kor’kron Juggernaut
Drops from Garrosh Hellscream in Siege of Orgrimmar (Level 90) – Mythic. Doesn’t always drop but seems higher rate than many.
(Garrosh Hellscream)
Life Binder’s Handmaiden
Drops from the raid reward after Deathwing in Dragon’s Soul – Heroic (Caverns of Time – Level 85). Can also appear in the Black Market. It is possible for this to drop at the same time as the Blazing Drake. If unfamiliar with Dragon’s Soul, worth checking a video on – particularly the section where you are on Blackwing’s back and the final Deathwing fight.
Mimiron’s Head
Drops from Yogg-Saron in Ulduar (25 man mode. Can drop in normal. Level 80 raid). However, you cannot have any Keepers assisting you with the Yogg-Saron fight. This means that after beating the upstairs bosses, do not talk to them. Can also rarely appear on Black Market.
(Yogg-Saron)
Mottle Meadowstomper
Drops from Lug’hok in Nagrand. Rare spawn but 100% drop rate.
(Lug’hok and known spawn locations)
Onyxian Drake
Very rare drop rate from Onyxia in Onyxia’s Lair (level 80). Can also appear in the Black Market.
(Onyxia)
Phosphorescent Stone Drake
Drops from Aeonaxx who spawns in Deepholme (rarely).
(Aeonaxx and known spawn locations)
Primeordial Direhorn
This mount comes in four different colours. Drops from a Zandalari Warbringer who can spawn rarely across Pandaria. The mount the Warbringer is riding will match the mount received.
(Zandalari Warbringer and one known spawn location)
Quiraji Battle Tank
Perhaps the most useless mount on this list. Randomly drop anywhere in Temple of Anh-Quiraj (level 60).
Comes in several different colours, but can only be summoned inside the raid.
Raven Lord
Low drop rate from Anzu in Setthek Halls (Level 63-70). Can also come from Black Market and Call to Arms reward satchels.
(Anzu)
Riding Camel
Drops from Dormus the Camel Holder. However, you cannot just fly to Dormus. Instead, you must explore Uldum and seek camel figurines. Figures spawn in different locations around once per hour. Rarely, a figurine will teleport you to Dormus. Only in this situation, if you then kill him, will you get the mount.
(Dormus the Camel Holder and his location)
Rivendare’s Deathcharger
Drops from Lord Aurius Rivendare in Stratholme (48-51 dungeon) – Normal mode (less than 1% drop rate). Also rarely from ‘Call to Arms’ reward satchels and Black Market.
(Lord Aurius Rivendare)
Sapphire Riverbeast
Drops from Silthide in Talador. Drops 100% of the time, and for every player contributing to the kill. Silthide is of course, a rare spawn.
(Silthide and known spawn locations)
Solar Spirehawk
This mount drops from Rukhmar who is a rare spawn in Spires of Arak. Seems to be a low drop rate on a rare spawn.
(Rukhmar and known spawn location)
Son of Galleon
Drops from Galleon in the Valley of the Four Winds. Yes, a rare spawn. Can also appear in the Black Market.
(Galleon and known spawn location)
Spawn of Horridon
Drops from Horridon in Throne of Thunder. Located on Thunder Island, you may need to look up how to get there as it is accessible through a portal you must unlock via quest. Thunder Isle is found off the NW coast of Pandaria.
(Horridon)
Subdued Seahorse
Dropped from Poseidus. Allegedly, after patch 4.1, is now useable outside Vash’jir, though presumably still underwater. Poseidus spawn rate was reduced at the same time.
(Poseidus)
Sunhide Gronnling
This mount drops from a rare spawn called Poundfist, found in Gogrond. Every player in the fight should see the mount drop.
(Poundfist and map of sightings)
Swift Breezestrider
This mount drops from a rare spawn called Pathfinder in Shadowmoon Valley. Every player contributing to the fight should get one.
(Pathfinder and map of sightings)
Swift White Hawstrider
This glorified chocobo drops from Kael’thas Sunstrider in Magister’s Terrace – Heroic mode. It is a less than 5% drop rate. Can also rarely be found on the Black Market and can be received from ‘Call to Arms’ rewards rarely.
(Kael’thas Sunstrider)
Swift Zulian Panther
This kitty can drop from High Priestess Kilnara in Zul’Gurub. Drop rate seems rare. I have run through ZG a dozen times and never seen one.
Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent
This flyer drops from Nalak,on Isle of Thunder. Drop rate unknown, but generally open world mount drops mean the kill target spawns rarely. My first visit to Isle of Thunder, I arrived in time to see Nalak’s body. Haven’t seen him since.
(Nalak and spawn location)
Thundering Onyx Cloud Serpent
Anecdotally a rare drop from Huolon in Timeless Isle. Can also appear on the Black Market.
(Huolon and sightings map)
Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent
This dragon mount is a guaranteed drop from Alani in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. However, there is a major trick. You need a Sky Crystal , which is made by combining 10x Skyshards – which are rare BoP drops from all lvl 90 Pandaria enemies. Without the crystal, Alani is invulnerable. The Sky Crystal removes the invulnerability buff. Also, you need two specific Pandaria reputations at Exalted to be able to ride it: Order of the Cloud Serpent, and The August Celestials. It can also appear on the Black Market.
Time-Lost Proto Drake
This mount drops from a mob of the same name, who spawns in Storm Peaks. I played WoTLK thoroughly, and have levelled multiple characters through it since and never seen this mob. Drop rate unknown.
(Time Lost Proto Drake mob and spawn sightings)
Twilight Drake
This guy drops from Satharion in Obsidian Sanctum, but only if you kill him before killing the surrounding named drakes (also an achievement).
Also note that attacking him will cause every other mob in the zone that is alive to surge into the middle and attack also. Very fun when you are a 110 Warlock with corpse explosion on his affliction artifact weapon.
(Satharion)
Vitreous Stone Drake
Less than 1% chance to drop from Slabhide in Stonecore. Can also rarely appear in the Black Market.
Voildtalon of the Dark Star
Somewhere in just about any location , once an hour a smoky portal called Edge of Reality spawns for 5 minutes. Inside is a mini instance with a Voidtalon corpse and a lootable Voidtalon egg that will reward the mount.
